This series explores the rapidly changing landscapes in the DC area including segregation, gentrification, and revitalization. As a local who observes the rapidly changing landscape over the last 45 years, I am anxious to document memories of space. With many people new to the area, there is an unintentional whitewashing of the city’s history- such as ignoring Howard University students fighting segregation in LeDroit Park or the lynching of a white ally in Falls Church, which prompted the activism of E.B. Henderson and Tinner family to bring the NAACP to the suburbs. I also celebrate the restoration of Eastern Market, the vibrancy of the new Wharf, and the endurance of the Black Cat. The DMV region is beautiful and violent, brilliant and ignorant, progressive and backward. In acknowledging our contrasts, we truly grow.
